Bergen Fjord Cruise Departure Piers: Find the Right Quay
Find the right Bergen fjord-cruise quay: Zachariasbryggen, Strandkaien and Dreggekaien, with cruise-berth transfers and boarding buffers.
Bergen’s fjord boats leave from several nearby quays. Match the exact address on your ticket before setting off: a Mostraumen ticket is not enough to identify the pier.

Quick answer
- Bergen’s fjord-cruise piers are all within a few hundred metres of each other around the Vågen harbour — which is exactly why people go to the wrong one. Several companies sell similarly named Mostraumen cruises with different meeting points, and “Strandkaien 11,” “Strandkaien 13,” “Dreggekaien” and “Zachariasbryggen” are all distinct places.
- The boats leave strictly on time and cannot wait. Rødne states plainly that boarding closes shortly before departure and the boat cannot wait for late passengers. Arriving at the wrong quay ten minutes before departure means missing the sailing.
- The fix takes thirty seconds: read the exact street address on your ticket, not the operator name or the city. Then allow 20–30 minutes’ buffer, which also gets you a window seat or deck space.
Key Findings
The main departure points, and who uses them:
- Zachariasbryggen (Torget 2) — the quay beside the Fish Market. Rødne’s Original Mostraumen cruise, and Fjordcharter Norway’s Bergen–Modalen cruise.
- Strandkaien / Strandkaiterminalen — next to the Tourist Information Centre. Norled’s Sognefjord express to Flåm, Rødne’s Hardangerfjord Express to Rosendal, Guided Fjord Tours / Fjord Cruise AS Mostraumen departures (Børshopen, Strandkaien 13), and the pick-up point for full-day Nærøyfjord bus tours (variously Strandkaien 1, 3 or 17).
- Dreggekaien — in front of the Radisson Blu at Bryggen. a quay named on some older Mostraumen listings and on other harbour-tour tickets. The current Fjord Cruise AS departure map instead specifies Strandkaien 13; use Dreggekaien only if your current voucher says so.
- Strandkaien 16 — the Guided Fjord Tours office where Mostraumen RIB safari passengers gear up before walking to the boat on the adjacent quay.
- Skoltegrunnskaien (Skolten), Bontelabo, Festningskaien, Jekteviken/Dokken — these are cruise-ship berths, not fjord-tour piers. If you are a ship passenger, you walk from these to the piers above.
The distances are small but the confusion is real. From Skolten to the fjord-cruise piers is a 10–15 minute walk; from Dokken/Jekteviken it is about 20 minutes or a shuttle, if provided by your ship, followed by a short walk. Between the fjord piers themselves it is rarely more than five minutes on foot — but five minutes is enough to miss a departure.

Details
Why this goes wrong so often
Four factors compound:
- Near-identical product names. “Mostraumen Fjord Cruise,” “Operated & Guided by Locals” and “Bergen–Modalen Fjordcruise” can refer to different products. Identify the actual operator and meeting point on the booking, not just the headline.
- Reseller listings that name the city, not the quay. Some third-party listings say only “Bergen” or “Bergen harbour” in the summary, with the actual address buried in the fine print or the voucher.
- Old or option-specific meeting points. Search results can preserve earlier departure arrangements; the current operator map and your dated voucher take precedence.
- The quays look alike. Vågen is ringed by wooden wharves and modern pontoons; without the street number, one looks much like another.
Pier-by-pier detail
Zachariasbryggen (Torget 2). Immediately adjacent to the Fish Market on the south-west side of Vågen, by the Zachariasbryggen restaurant complex. This is the busiest fjord-cruise quay and the one most visitors picture. Flat, central, a few minutes’ walk from Bryggen. Rødne’s Mostraumen boats and Fjordcharter’s Modalen cruise leave from here.
Strandkaien and Strandkaiterminalen. A short walk south-west along the waterfront from the Fish Market, beside the Tourist Information Centre. The terminal building serves the scheduled express boats — Norled north to the Sognefjord, Rødne south to Rosendal. Note that Rødne provides no staff inside the terminal for the Rosendal service; you find the boat yourself. Individual street numbers matter here: Strandkaien 13 (Børshopen) and Strandkaien 16 (the Guided Fjord Tours office) are separate addresses a short distance apart, and bus tours use Strandkaien 1, 3 or 17.
Dreggekaien. On the north-east side of Vågen, in front of the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel at the Bryggen end. Older Mostraumen listings name this quay, but the current Fjord Cruise AS departure map lists Børshopen at Strandkaien 13. Do not navigate here for a Mostraumen sailing without checking your voucher. Other harbour trips can have their own meeting points.
Bradbenken, Bontelabo and Nøstet. Working and port quays rather than tourist-cruise piers. Bradbenken sits by Bryggen. Verify whether any specific tourist operator currently uses these before relying on them.
For cruise-ship passengers
Your ship docks at a cruise berth, not a fjord pier:
- Skolten (Skoltegrunnskaien), Bontelabo and Festningskaien are central, beside Bergenhus Fortress, a 5–15 minute flat waterfront walk (roughly 600–900 m) to Bryggen and the Fish Market, and 10–15 minutes to the fjord piers.
- Jekteviken and Dokken are industrial berths farther from the tourist quays. Walking time depends on the ship’s exit gate; allow around 20–30 minutes or more and ask your cruise line whether a shuttle runs, whether it is accessible and whether it has a charge.
Berth assignment can change at short notice, so check the Bergen Havn arrivals list a few days out and confirm with your line. Build the walk or shuttle into your timing, and remember that a Jekteviken berth adds roughly 20–30 minutes each way.
Getting to the piers
- From Bryggen or the city centre: a flat walk of a few minutes to any of the Vågen quays.
- From Bergen railway station: roughly 15 minutes on foot into the harbour area.
- From Bergen Airport Flesland: the Bybanen light rail Line 1 takes roughly 45 minutes to the centre; check the Skyss journey planner for your departure, then a 5–10 minute walk; the Flybussen coach journey depends on the stop and traffic; check its current timetable.
- Parking: the Fish Market area is pedestrian-heavy; use a central paid garage.
The buffer rule
Arrive 20–30 minutes before departure. This does three things: it absorbs a wrong-quay error, it secures an indoor window seat or a good deck spot (seating is unreserved and fills up), and it removes the stress of a boat that genuinely will not wait. Reviewers repeatedly describe chaotic boarding scrums at peak summer departures; being early is the whole defence.
Recommendations
- Before you leave your hotel, open your booking and read the exact street address. Not the operator name, not “Bergen harbour” — the street and number.
- Search that address, not the tour name, in your maps app, and walk to it.
- If your ticket says only “Bergen,” contact the operator or check its website for the departure point; do not assume Zachariasbryggen.
- Allow 20–30 minutes’ buffer, more if you are walking from a cruise berth.
- Cruise passengers: confirm your berth in advance and add the shuttle or walk into your timing.
- If you realise you are at the wrong quay, the piers are close enough that a brisk five-minute walk usually saves you — which is precisely why the buffer matters.
Caveats
- Pier assignments change by operator and season and must be checked against your ticket before travel; the departure points listed here reflect recent operator information.
- Some quays (Bradbenken, Nøstet) could not be confirmed as current tourist-cruise departure points; do not use them without an explicit address on your ticket.
- Cruise berth allocation is outside passengers’ control and can change at short notice.
- Walking times are approximations for an able-bodied walker on flat ground; allow more if you have mobility needs, luggage or young children.
