Mostraumen vs Bergen City Cruise: Which Boat Trip Should You Book?

Mostraumen fjord cruise or Bergen City Cruise in winter 2026–2027: routes, prices, departure times, piers, holiday sailings, accessibility and cancellation terms side by side.

Updated November 2026

Book the Mostraumen fjord cruise if you came to Bergen to see a steep, narrow Norwegian fjord. Book the Bergen City Cruise if you want a shorter, cheaper ride that shows Bergen’s harbor and waterfront from the water. Both leave from the city center, both sail in winter and both have indoor seating, but they go to different places.

The Bergen City Cruise stays in the waters around the city and never reaches the Mostraumen strait. It takes 1.5 hours; the Mostraumen trip takes 3 to 3.5 hours because the boat runs up the Osterfjord to the narrow passage and back. Prices and winter dates below were checked on November 6, 2026, so open the calendar for your own date before you plan the rest of the day:

The City Cruise is a good trip in its own right, but it does not replace the Mostraumen cruise. The routes differ, and so do the reasons to book each one.

Other ways to spend a winter day in Bergen

If neither boat fills your day, Bergen has more to book in winter. Browse what runs from Bergen, from the Ulriken cable car above the city to full-day trips to Flåm and the Nærøyfjord:

Where each boat goes

Mostraumen: from Bergen harbor up the Osterfjord to the strait

A Mostraumen cruise starts among the harbor buildings, passes the old waterfront and heads out of the city into fjord country. Along the Osterfjord the settlements thin out and the mountainsides grow steeper. The high point is the Mostraumen strait, a narrow channel where the rock closes in around the boat.

Depending on the weather, you pass waterfalls, farms on steep slopes and snow on the high ground, and the city is soon well behind you. When conditions allow, the crew may nose in toward a waterfall. Don’t plan to land or hike: Rødne’s Mostraumen trip is a continuous round trip with no stop ashore.

This is the trip most visitors picture when they think of a half-day fjord cruise from Bergen, and the one to choose for landscape photos over historic buildings. Two other operators sail the same route later in the morning: Guided Fjord Tours at 10:30 from Strandkaien 13, sold as the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise, Operated and Guided by Locals (from $71, 4.6/5 from 4,533 reviews), and Fjordcharter at 11:00 from Zachariasbryggen, sold as the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise with Live Guide (from $80, 4.7/5 from 3,087 reviews).

Winter caveat: Rødne warns that ice can block the usual route, and the crew may then pick another one. Treat the published route as the plan; a winter sailing may not reach the narrowest section.

Rødne’s page has the full Mostraumen tour details.

Bergen City Cruise: Vågen, the Byfjord and the Puddefjord

The Bergen City Cruise is a 1.5-hour round trip around the city. Visit Bergen lists the route through Vågen, the Byfjord and the Puddefjord, past Bergenhus Fortress, Sandviken, Old Bergen and Nordnes, with the city and its mountains behind.

It is a sightseeing trip along the harbor and the city waterfront. You see Bergen’s seafaring history and the way the city wraps around the water, which suits anyone who likes photographing cities from a boat. After a cold morning on foot, the short ride is also easy on tired legs.

You won’t reach Mostraumen, though, and you won’t get the long inland route or the narrow strait between steep slopes. Some of the waters around Bergen carry “fjord” in their names, so both trips turn up in searches for fjord cruises. Look past the word fjord and check where the boat goes.

Visit Bergen has the Bergen City Cruise listing with times and fares.

Which cruise has the bigger scenery?

For mountains and fjord walls, take Mostraumen. The steep sides and the narrow strait are the reason to go, and you cannot get those views by circling the city harbor.

The City Cruise has its own strengths. It shows the layout of Bergen and its skyline and old districts from the water. If maritime history, architecture or an easy hour and a half on the water appeals to you more than wild scenery, it is the better outing.

If the classic fjord photo is the goal, don’t choose on price alone: the extra two hours on the Mostraumen boat take you somewhere else entirely.

Winter departure times

After the route, the timetable is the biggest practical difference.

Mostraumen: one morning departure

Rødne sails at 10:00 every day in November and December 2026 and in January and February 2027, and on through March. The trip takes 3 to 3.5 hours, so expect to be back around 13:00–13:30, depending on conditions.

Guided Fjord Tours (10:30) and Fjordcharter (11:00) add late-morning sailings. A winter timetable does not prove that seats exist on your date, especially on a public holiday, so check the booking calendar.

The morning start suits winter. In December Bergen gets under six and a half hours of daylight, falling to about 5 hours 45 minutes at the solstice, and a 10:00 departure uses the best of it. A fjord cruise leaving after lunch would run into the dark in midwinter.

Bergen City Cruise: four departures a day

Visit Bergen lists the City Cruise from September 4, 2026 to March 31, 2027 as follows:

DepartureBack atWhen it makes sense
10:0011:30Daylight sightseeing and an early finish
12:0013:30Usually the best winter choice: late morning into midday
14:0015:30Afternoon light, though the end can be dark in December
16:0017:30The city at dusk or after dark, not daylight scenery in winter

These are scheduled times; seats are a separate question. Check the calendar for your date, because a departure can be sold out, changed or cancelled.

Christmas and New Year 2026–2027

Visit Bergen lists these holiday changes for the Bergen City Cruise:

DateBergen City Cruise departures
December 24, 202610:00 and 12:00
December 25, 202612:00, 14:00 and 16:00
December 31, 202610:00 and 12:00
January 1, 202712:00 and 14:00

That helps if no Mostraumen departure is bookable on your holiday date. It is still a harbor cruise, and it does not go through Mostraumen.

Rødne publishes a daily winter schedule but names no holiday exceptions, so Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are neither ruled out nor confirmed. Open your date in its calendar. Our Christmas and New Year fjord cruise guide covers the holiday week date by date.

Prices: is Mostraumen worth the extra?

Adult and child fares as published in November 2026:

Published fares can change, and discounts or booking fees change what you pay.

Mostraumen costs about twice as much as the City Cruise and lasts about twice as long, and it goes somewhere the city boat doesn’t. Which is better value depends on what you came to see.

  • For fjord landscapes: Mostraumen is the better use of a short stay and the money.
  • For a cheap winter boat ride: the City Cruise costs NOK 460 less per adult.
  • With children who won’t last three hours: the short ride is easier.
  • If you already have a full-day fjord trip booked: the City Cruise adds a different view of Bergen without a second rural fjord.

Rødne gives 20% off with the Bergen Card when you book through its system. Don’t assume the City Cruise offers the same; check the card’s benefits for your ticket.

Departure piers: don’t walk to the wrong boat

Both boats leave from central Bergen, close enough together that people mix them up.

Mostraumen with Rødne

  • Departure: Zachariasbryggen, Torget 2.
  • Landmark: the Fish Market.
  • Check-in: arrive before boarding closes; the boat does not wait for latecomers.

Bergen City Cruise

  • Departure: Dreggekaien.
  • Landmark: opposite Home Hotel Havnekontoret, at the Bryggen and Bergenhus end of the harbor.
  • Check-in: follow the boarding instructions in your confirmation.

These are two different quays. Other Mostraumen operators board elsewhere again, so go by your operator’s meeting point instead of a generic map pin for “Bergen fjord cruise”. Our Bergen departure-pier guide maps every quay.

Both piers are in the center, so you don’t need a car. Stay near the Fish Market, Bryggen or the central streets if you want to walk everywhere.

Which is warmer and more comfortable in winter?

Both boats have indoor seating and outdoor decks. Rødne’s kiosk sells baked goods, snacks and hot drinks. You have somewhere to warm up between photos, but the decks still get cold and windy.

On the Mostraumen boat

The longer trip means more time on board, including stretches that are quieter than the strait itself. Rødne’s large enclosed lounge is useful on wet December days. Go outside for the best fjord views and come back in when you get cold.

Bring extra layers, because the outer decks feel much colder than the streets of Bergen. Snow on the mountains is possible, but snowfall and frozen waterfalls are not guaranteed.

On the Bergen City Cruise

At 1.5 hours, the City Cruise is less tiring for anyone who doesn’t want a long time on the water. The heated seating and the city route make it an easy break between cafés, museums and shops.

A shorter trip doesn’t mean better weather. Both boats sail on coastal water where wind and rain affect comfort, and the operator decides whether it is safe to go.

Our Bergen fjord cruise packing guide covers what to wear.

Accessibility and small children

If someone in your group uses a wheelchair or has trouble with steps, the boarding rules matter more than the price.

The Bergen City Cruise listing describes wide walkways, ramps and handrails for wheelchairs, strollers and anyone with reduced mobility. Confirm the vessel, the boarding setup and any assistance for your date before you buy.

Rødne’s Mostraumen rules are stricter. Bergen’s tides make boarding harder, and Rødne states that wheelchair users must be able to walk on and off the boat and manage stairs. That can rule the trip out for some passengers despite the large indoor lounge. Companions with documentation travel free.

With children, think about the age and patience of the youngest. Both operators let children under 4 travel free and charge child fares from 4 to 15, but 1.5 hours around the harbor and 3 to 3.5 hours into a fjord are very different outings. Bring snacks, waterproof layers and something to do during the quieter stretches.

Our family, accessibility and seasickness guide has more on boarding and facilities.

Cancellations and route changes in bad weather

The Bergen City Cruise listing gives a full refund if you cancel at least 48 hours before departure and no refund after that. That is the rule for your own cancellation; check what happens if the operator cancels a sailing.

Rødne advertises a flexible change and cancellation policy; read the actual conditions in its FAQ before you buy. It also warns that ice can force an alternative Mostraumen route. A changed route does not automatically mean a refund, and ordinary rain does not mean the sailing is off.

What to do in winter:

  1. Check the operator’s live booking calendar before you commit to a departure.
  2. Read the rules for your own cancellation, an operator cancellation and a route change one by one.
  3. Check the forecast close to the date; visibility matters more for sightseeing than the temperature.
  4. Keep your city plans loose in case your cruise time moves.

On a one-night stay with a late-morning arrival, the City Cruise gives you more chances to get on the water. Just don’t book the 16:00 sailing expecting daylight views in December.

Winter light: the 10:00 Mostraumen or a later City Cruise?

Winter daylight is short, so the departure time matters.

  • November: both morning departures get good daylight; late-afternoon sailings get darker as the month goes on.
  • December: daylight shrinks to about 5 hours 45 minutes at the solstice. Mostraumen’s 10:00 cruise fits inside it. The City Cruise’s 16:00 sailing runs in twilight and darkness.
  • January: the days lengthen slowly, but later departures can still be dark.
  • February: with more daylight, a 14:00 City Cruise is easier to enjoy, though cloud and the actual sunset still matter.

Low winter sun can light up the mountains, but tall fjord walls also throw long shadows, and cloud or fog can hide the view. For photos, daylight and visibility count for more than a convenient time on the booking page.

Our December Mostraumen guide covers sunrise, sunset, weather and snow in detail.

Which cruise should you book?

Book Mostraumen if…

  • You came to Norway for steep fjord scenery, not just a harbor ride.
  • You have half a day free, ideally the morning.
  • Waterfalls and countryside matter more to you than a city skyline.
  • You want the biggest nature trip you can do from Bergen without going to Flåm.
  • You are happy to pay more for a longer trip to a specific place.

Book the Bergen City Cruise if…

  • You have less than two hours, or want to keep most of the day for the city.
  • Bergen’s seafaring history and waterfront interest you most.
  • You want the lower fare.
  • You want more departure times, including the afternoon.
  • Someone in your group needs ramp boarding; Rødne asks wheelchair users to manage stairs.
  • You already have a full-day fjord trip booked and want something short and different.

When neither one fits

If you want to step off in a village, walk to a waterfall or see the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, neither city-center round trip does that. Look at a full day to Flåm and the Nærøyfjord, such as the UNESCO Fjord Cruise, Flåm and Stegastein with lunch (from $311, 4.7/5 from 1,492 reviews), and check its winter connections for your date.

With only two days and a city to see as well, a full-day trip costs you a lot of Bergen. Our two-day Bergen winter itinerary fits in one cruise and the city.

Can you do both cruises on the same day?

Yes, the timetables allow it: the 10:00 Mostraumen trip is back around 13:00–13:30, and the 14:00 or 16:00 City Cruise leaves later. For most visitors it is not the best use of the day.

You would spend about 4.5 to 5 hours on the water, plus the wait and the walk between quays, and both boats cover the same stretch of harbor near Bryggen. In December the later City Cruise runs partly or wholly after sunset.

With one day, pick the cruise that matches what you came for and spend the rest on Bryggen, the Fish Market, the Fløibanen funicular or a museum. If you love boats and harbors, doing both can still make sense; confirm both times and allow for delays.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bergen City Cruise the same as the Mostraumen fjord cruise?

No. The Bergen City Cruise is a 1.5-hour trip around the harbor and city waterfront through Vågen, the Byfjord and the Puddefjord. The Mostraumen cruise takes 3 to 3.5 hours and goes up the Osterfjord to the narrow Mostraumen strait.

Which is better for a first look at the Norwegian fjords?

Mostraumen, if steep natural scenery is what you want. The City Cruise shows Bergen’s waterfront and is not meant to stand in for a fjord trip.

Which Bergen cruise is cheaper?

The Bergen City Cruise: NOK 430 per adult, against Rødne’s NOK 890 in 2026 or NOK 940 in 2027. Check the booking pages for current fares.

Is there a 90-minute Mostraumen cruise from central Bergen?

No. The 1.5-hour Bergen City Cruise does not go to Mostraumen. Every Mostraumen trip from the city center is a half-day round trip.

Does the Bergen City Cruise sail on Christmas Day 2026?

Visit Bergen lists 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00 departures on December 25, 2026, subject to seats and operating conditions. That says nothing about the Mostraumen operators on the same day.

I arrive in Bergen at noon. Is the City Cruise the better choice?

It gives you more options. The 14:00 or 16:00 departure works if you can reach Dreggekaien in time. Rødne’s winter Mostraumen cruise leaves at 10:00, so a noon arrival is too late for it.

Can I see waterfalls on the Bergen City Cruise?

The City Cruise is sold for city waterfront sights; the waterfalls and the narrow passage are on the Mostraumen route. How much water the falls carry depends on recent rain and snowmelt.

Are both cruises suitable for wheelchair users?

Not equally. The Bergen City Cruise describes ramps and wide walkways, though you should confirm access for your sailing. Rødne states that wheelchair users on its Mostraumen cruise must be able to walk on and off the boat and manage stairs.

Is Mostraumen worth it in February?

For many visitors, yes. The 10:00 sailing uses the daylight, and the mountains look dramatic even without snow at sea level. Visibility, weather and the route vary, so book with winter expectations.

Pick the destination, then the boat time

The choice gets easy once you know where each boat goes.

Mostraumen suits travelers who want Norwegian fjord scenery in half a day. It leaves the city behind and reaches the narrow strait the cruise is named after. The Bergen City Cruise suits a short, cheaper look at the city from the water, especially when you want more departure times or have no morning to spare.

Before you buy, check the operator, route, pier and departure time. A listing that says fjord can still be a harbor loop. In winter, double-check holiday dates and pick a daylight sailing if the scenery matters to you.

To book, open the calendar for the Original Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen or Rødne’s own page, and compare it with the Bergen City Cruise listing.
