Best Time for a Mostraumen Fjord Cruise from Bergen

There’s no bad time to sail through Mostraumen. The 50-metre-wide strait is dramatic in winter fog, electric under midsummer light, and gilded orange in October. But the experience — and the practicalities around it — change meaningfully across the year. Here’s what to expect month by month.

Peak Season: June–August

Midsummer is the most popular window for a reason. Bergen receives nearly 19 hours of daylight around the summer solstice, which means you’ll be sailing through the fjord in full light even on a late afternoon departure. Air temperatures typically reach 18–22 °C in Bergen, and the water temperature nudges up enough that the open deck is genuinely pleasant.

This is also the best period for wildlife. White-tailed sea eagles are active along the Mostraumen cliffs, porpoises appear regularly in Bjørnafjorden, and the hillsides are in full green. Waterfalls that slow to a trickle by autumn run at full volume through June.

The trade-off is crowds. July is Bergen’s busiest month — cruise ships dock in the harbour, the fish market is packed, and fjord tours sell out days in advance. Book early if you’re travelling in July.

What to pack: Light layers, a windproof jacket (the fjord is always cooler than the city), sunscreen for open-deck sitting, and sunglasses. Bergen gets rain in summer — a packable rain jacket takes up almost no space.

Shoulder Season: May and September

These two months are arguably the best value. Daylight is generous (15–17 hours in May, 12–14 hours in September), the fjord is fully accessible, foliage is either bright new green (May) or early autumn gold (September), and tourist numbers are noticeably lower than July.

Prices on the cruise itself don’t vary dramatically by season, but Bergen hotels are cheaper in May and September, and you’ll have an easier time getting the departure time you want without booking weeks ahead.

Wildlife is still active in both months. Sea eagle sightings are actually more reliable in September when juveniles are learning to hunt — the guides know where to look along the cliff sections.

Weather note: May can bring cold snaps — bring an extra layer. September evenings cool fast; the fjord air can feel close to 10 °C even if the city feels mild.

Winter: October–April

Winter cruises operate but require different expectations. By December, Bergen has only 6–7 hours of daylight, and the morning departures run in near-darkness. That sounds like a disadvantage, but for photographers the low-angle winter light hitting the cliff faces is extraordinary — a completely different mood from summer.

The Mostraumen strait itself is equally dramatic in any season; the rock and water don’t change. What changes is the colour of the light and how much you’ll use the covered indoor seating versus the open deck.

January and February are Bergen’s rainiest months, and while the cruise continues through most weather (the catamaran has full indoor seating), rough conditions on Bjørnafjorden can make the crossing choppy. November–February departures are less frequent — check schedules in advance.

Practical tip: Book the earliest available winter departure to maximise daylight. If you’re flexible, late October and early November often have dramatic autumn colour on the fjord hillsides with tourist crowds already gone.
