Bergen Fjord Cruises at Christmas and New Year: Which Tours Run?
Which Bergen fjord cruises sail from December 20, 2026 to January 2, 2027: Mostraumen departures, the Christmas Eve closure, Norway in a Nutshell dates, daylight and the New Year's Eve cruise.
Bergen Fjord Cruises at Christmas and New Year: Which Tours Run?
You can take a fjord cruise from Bergen over Christmas and New Year, but plan around the date. The Mostraumen boats publish daily winter departures, one operator does not sail on Christmas Eve, and Norway in a Nutshell is not listed as operating on December 24, December 25 or January 1. A daily winter timetable covers the season, but only the booking calendar shows whether a seat exists on the 25th.
If you have one day in Bergen, start with a morning Mostraumen cruise. It leaves from the city center, takes about 3.5 hours and is back at the harbor while it is still light. If you want a midnight celebration on the water, Bergen also has a separate New Year’s Eve cruise on December 31, 2026, which stays in the waters off the city.
This guide covers December 20, 2026 to January 2, 2027, using the schedules and holiday exceptions published when we checked on November 3, 2026. Prices and holiday timetables change, so open your date in the calendar before you plan the rest of the day:
Which cruises run over Christmas and New Year
| Cruise or trip | Winter schedule | Holiday caveat | On GetYourGuide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rødne: Bergen–Mostraumen | 10:00 daily, about 3.5 hours | Timetable says daily and names no holiday exceptions; check your date | Original Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen, from $78, 4.7/5 from 10,515 reviews |
| Guided Fjord Tours: Mostraumen from Strandkaien 13 | 10:30 to about 14:30 through December 31, 2026 | Check December 24, 25 and 31 one by one | Mostraumen Fjord Cruise, Operated and Guided by Locals, from $71, 4.6/5 from 4,529 reviews |
| Fjordcharter: Mostraumen with a live guide | 11:00 daily from September 1 to March 31, about 3.5 hours | No sailing on December 24; other dates still need checking | Mostraumen Fjord Cruise with Live Guide, from $80, 4.7/5 from 3,080 reviews |
| Norway in a Nutshell | Full day by train, boat and bus | Not listed as operating December 24–25, 2026 or January 1, 2027 | Not sold on GetYourGuide; the nearest guided day is UNESCO Fjord Cruise, Flåm and Stegastein, from $311, 4.7/5 from 1,492 reviews |
| Bergen New Year’s Eve Cruise | Late evening, December 31, 2026 into January 1, 2027 | A party cruise off the city, not the daytime Mostraumen trip | Not sold on GetYourGuide |
Rødne’s 10:00 departure is the one to check first for fjord scenery: it has the most reviews of any Mostraumen cruise and leaves earliest, so you get the most daylight. Guided Fjord Tours at 10:30 suits you if the 10:00 boat is full or you prefer smaller vessels, and Fjordcharter at 11:00 suits you if a live guide matters more than an early return.
Date by date, December 20 to January 2
| Date | What you can plan around | What to check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| December 20–22 | Winter Mostraumen schedules; Bergen Christmas Market open until December 22 | Seats, weather and return time |
| Wednesday, December 23 | A good day for a morning Mostraumen cruise or a longer fjord day | Operator calendar and train or bus connections |
| Thursday, December 24 (Christmas Eve) | Rødne’s general timetable lists the 10:00 sailing | Fjordcharter does not sail; Norway in a Nutshell is not listed; check any other sailing for this date |
| Friday, December 25 (Christmas Day) | Some sightseeing boats may run on their winter schedules | Norway in a Nutshell is not listed; Pepperkakebyen is closed; confirm any cruise with the operator |
| Saturday, December 26 | Norway in a Nutshell’s listed period resumes; Mostraumen schedules continue | Seats, holiday hours and each transport leg |
| December 27–30 | Easy dates to compare half-day and full-day trips | Seats, conditions and the departure pier |
| Thursday, December 31 (New Year’s Eve) | Daytime winter sailings plus the separate late-evening cruise | Morning availability; dinner and evening tickets |
| Friday, January 1, 2027 (New Year’s Day) | Short local trips may run | Norway in a Nutshell is not listed; Pepperkakebyen is closed; check each sailing |
| Saturday, January 2, 2027 | Norway in a Nutshell’s listed period resumes; Rødne lists 10:00 January sailings | Tickets and current conditions |
A date inside an operating season is not a promise that the boat leaves on a public holiday. The departure can be sold out, changed by weather or missing from one booking channel while another still sells it.
Other Bergen Experiences Over the Holidays
Between Christmas and New Year there is time for more than one trip. Browse what else runs from Bergen in winter, from the Ulriken cable car above the city to full-day tours to Flåm and the Nærøyfjord and trips to the Hardangerfjord:
Mostraumen: the fjord trip that fits a holiday day
A Mostraumen cruise leaves central Bergen, follows the coast north and turns into the Osterfjord, where the mountains close in around the water. The high point is the narrow Mostraumen strait. Depending on the route and the weather, you may pass waterfalls, small farms by the water and slopes with snow on top.
The trip is a round trip with no stop ashore. You are back on the Bergen waterfront by early afternoon, which leaves time for a Christmas meal, Bryggen or the gingerbread town. A full-day trip to Flåm leaves you none.
Rødne’s 10:00 cruise
Rødne publishes a daily 10:00 departure from November to March, December 2026 and January 2027 included. The boat leaves from Zachariasbryggen, Torget 2, beside the Fish Market, and the round trip takes about 3.5 hours.
The catamaran has a heated indoor lounge, toilets, open decks, a kiosk and a recorded commentary. In winter the lounge matters: you can step outside for the strait and the photos, then warm up again.
On rodne.no an adult ticket costs NOK 890 in 2026 and NOK 940 in 2027. Children aged 4 to 15 pay NOK 445 in 2026 and NOK 470 in 2027, and children under 4 travel free. The Bergen Card gives 20% off when you book with Rødne. On GetYourGuide the Original Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen started from $78 per person when we checked, and it is rated 4.7/5 from 10,515 reviews.
Rødne’s page says the boat sails every day, rain or shine, and lists no holiday exceptions. It does not confirm December 24, 25 or 31 or January 1 as bookable either, so open the date on Rødne’s Mostraumen page or in the GetYourGuide calendar before you build the day around it.
Guided Fjord Tours at 10:30 from Strandkaien 13
Visit Bergen lists a 10:30 departure from Strandkaien 13, returning at about 14:30, from NOK 840 for dates up to December 31, 2026. This is a different company and a different pier from Rødne’s 10:00 boat, on smaller vessels with a live guide. The same cruise is on GetYourGuide as the Mostraumen cruise operated and guided by locals, from $71 and rated 4.6/5 from 4,529 reviews.
It is the natural second choice if the 10:00 sailing is full. The winter listing covers the season, not each holiday, so check your exact date before you rely on it.
Fjordcharter at 11:00 with a live guide
Fjordcharter sails at 11:00 every day from September 1 to March 31, from Zachariasbryggen, on a round trip of about 3.5 hours through Mostraumen toward Modalen. A guide on board talks you through the fjord, the villages and the local history. The Mostraumen cruise with a live guide started from $80 on GetYourGuide and is rated 4.7/5 from 3,080 reviews.
Fjordcharter’s FAQ names one exception: it does not sail on Christmas Eve, December 24. Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are not listed as exceptions, but they are not confirmed either, so check the calendar.

If no Mostraumen cruise runs on Christmas Day
The fallback is a short harbor cruise. Norway’s Best runs the Bergen City Cruise, a sightseeing trip around the harbor and the Byfjord past the waterfront districts, with heated seating inside and open decks. Its winter times and prices were not available to us when we checked, and the company warns that timetables can change, so look up December 25 or January 1 on Norway’s Best’s Bergen City Cruise page before you count on a sailing.
A harbor cruise does not reach the Mostraumen strait. If you came for steep fjord walls and the waterfall, it will not replace that trip.
If nothing suitable sails, keep the day loose: walk Bryggen and the harbor, check which indoor sights are open and book somewhere to eat. Shops, restaurants and buses keep reduced hours from December 24 to 26 and on January 1, so do not count on normal opening times.
Norway in a Nutshell over Christmas
Norway in a Nutshell is a full day of scenic railway, the Flåm Railway and a boat on the Nærøyfjord, a much longer trip than the Mostraumen round trip. Visit Bergen’s winter listing gives its 2026 periods as up to December 23, then December 26 to 31, with the next period starting January 2, 2027. December 24, December 25 and January 1 are not listed as operating, so plan on those dates being unavailable. December 31 is open to check if you want a full day of rail and fjord before the evening.
Norway in a Nutshell is sold by Fjord Tours and is not on GetYourGuide. If you would rather book a guided day with one pickup, the UNESCO fjord cruise to Flåm and Stegastein with lunch started from $311 and is rated 4.7/5 from 1,492 reviews, and the Flåm Railway, Nærøyfjord cruise and Stegastein day started from $464, rated 4.8/5 from 235 reviews. Check that either one runs on your date.
A full day in late December means much of the travel happens before sunrise or after sunset. If you want a relaxed afternoon in Bergen, Mostraumen is the easier fit. Our Mostraumen vs Nærøyfjord and Flåm comparison sets the two side by side, and the Norway in a Nutshell guide covers the full-day options.
New Year’s Eve: daytime fjord cruise or midnight celebration?
These are two very different ways to spend December 31, 2026.
For the scenery, book a morning Mostraumen cruise. The 10:00 boat is back at about 13:30, which leaves the afternoon and evening free for food and the celebrations. In late December the useful light is in the middle of the day.
For fireworks and a night out, Norway’s Best has advertised a New Year’s Eve Cruise on the Legacy of The Fjords. Its preliminary program, as shown in search listings when we checked, has boarding at about 21:30, departure at about 22:00 and a return at about 01:00 on January 1, with music and the midnight celebration out on the Byfjord looking back at Bergen. It is aimed at adults. We could not open the event page itself, so treat those times as provisional and check tickets, the final program and the boarding pier on Norway’s Best’s New Year’s Eve cruise page.
The evening cruise does not go to Mostraumen. You get the harbor and the countdown, and no narrow fjord in daylight.
Daylight at Christmas
The morning Mostraumen sailings have enough light. Bergen gets about 5 hours 45 minutes of daylight around Christmas, and the 10:00 boat is usually back by about 13:30.
On December 24 and 25, 2026, the sun rises at about 09:45 and sets at about 15:30. By January 1, 2027, sunset has moved to about 15:40. Those are times for the city. Narrow valleys along the route can stay in shadow, and a heavy overcast makes the fjord look darker than the clock suggests.
For photos, the morning cruise is your best chance of seeing the route. A harbor cruise after 15:30 is a trip for the waterfront lights, not the mountains. More on the short days, the weather and the light is in our guide to a December fjord cruise from Bergen.
Snow, frozen waterfalls and ice
You may see snow on the higher mountains, but a white Christmas in central Bergen is never certain. Coastal winter weather often brings rain, cloud and temperatures near or just above freezing, and the pier, the Osterfjord and the mountains can look like three different seasons on the same morning.
- Ordinary rain does not cancel the cruise. The indoor lounge is where you spend the wet stretches.
- Strong wind or rough conditions can disrupt a sailing. Follow the operator’s updates on the day.
- Ice in the inner fjord can stop a boat from taking its usual route through Mostraumen. Rødne says ice “can lead to an alternative route.”
A changed route, a cancelled departure and a cancellation you request yourself are three different refund cases. Read the policy attached to your ticket and seller before you pay, and do not assume an ice-related change earns a refund: Guided Fjord Tours’ listing says it does not.
Our guide to the winter Mostraumen cruise has more on the weather and on what happens on board.
Three holiday days with a fjord cruise
Before Christmas: December 20–22
- 09:30: Reach the departure pier on your ticket and check in.
- 10:00–13:30: Mostraumen cruise, if it runs.
- 14:00: A warm lunch in the center.
- 15:00: Pepperkakebyen, Bergen’s gingerbread town, or a walk through Bryggen.
- Late afternoon and evening: The lit-up Bergen Christmas Market at Festplassen.
The Christmas Market runs from November 20 to December 22, 2026 and is closed by Christmas Day. Pepperkakebyen runs from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Christmas Day: December 25
- Morning: A Mostraumen or harbor cruise, only if your departure is confirmed and booked.
- Afternoon: A walk along the waterfront and Bryggen, weather permitting.
- Evening: A restaurant with a confirmed Christmas Day booking, or food you bought ahead.
Leave Pepperkakebyen off this day: it is closed on December 25 and on January 1.
New Year’s Eve: December 31
- Morning: The 10:00 Mostraumen cruise, if it runs and has seats.
- Afternoon: Explore Bergen, check holiday hours for anything you want to see and rest before the night.
- Evening: A booked dinner, or the separate New Year’s Eve cruise if that is the celebration you want.
If you are weighing both a morning and a midnight boat, you only need the morning one to see Mostraumen.
How to book a holiday fjord cruise
- Pick the date first, then the operator. “Daily winter departures” does not guarantee a holiday sailing.
- Choose the route. Mostraumen is a half day into the Osterfjord and the narrow strait; a harbor cruise is the waterfront; Norway in a Nutshell is a long day by rail and fjord.
- Check the pier. Rødne and Fjordcharter use Zachariasbryggen by the Fish Market, Guided Fjord Tours uses Strandkaien 13, and the harbor and New Year’s Eve cruises name their pier on the ticket. Our pier guide shows where each one is.
- Read the ticket terms. Compare the final price, child fares, discounts, the weather policy and the free-cancellation deadline.
- Arrive early. Get to the pier 20–30 minutes before departure for a window seat, and allow extra time for holiday buses and cold-weather queues.
You can book with the operator or through a ticket platform. Choose the one with clear terms and real availability on your date; the lowest “from” price matters less. Our Bergen fjord cruise costs and booking guide compares the two routes in detail.
Frequently asked questions
Do Bergen fjord cruises run on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026?
Some operators publish winter schedules covering all of December, but that does not confirm a bookable Christmas Day departure. Check December 25 in the Rødne, Guided Fjord Tours or Fjordcharter calendar. Norway in a Nutshell is not listed as operating that day.
Does Rødne sail to Mostraumen on December 24 and 25?
Rødne advertises a 10:00 sailing every day from November to March and names no holiday exceptions, but its timetable does not confirm the holidays one by one. Check December 24 or 25 in the booking calendar or ask Rødne before you rely on it.
Which Mostraumen operator does not sail on Christmas Eve?
Fjordcharter. Its FAQ says the cruise runs all year except December 24.
Is there a fjord cruise from Bergen on New Year's Eve?
The daytime winter schedules include December 31, subject to seats. Norway's Best has also advertised a late-evening New Year's Eve cruise that runs past midnight into January 1, 2027. That one is a celebration on the Byfjord, not a trip to Mostraumen.
Can I visit Bergen's Christmas Market after a cruise on December 25?
No. The 2026 Bergen Christmas Market ends on December 22, so pair it with a cruise on an earlier date.
Is a Christmas cruise too cold for children?
The Mostraumen boats have heated indoor lounges, so children do not have to stay outside. Bring warm waterproof layers, a hat, gloves and shoes with grip, and check the age rules for child tickets. Children under 4 travel free with Rødne.
Will I get a refund if ice stops the boat reaching Mostraumen?
Not necessarily. Operators can sail another route instead, and Guided Fjord Tours says a route change does not give grounds for a refund. Rules vary by operator, seller and whether the departure is cancelled or only changed, so read the terms on your ticket.
Is the Mostraumen cruise good in late December?
Yes, if you want to see a Norwegian fjord without spending a whole winter day traveling. Take a morning departure, expect rain or cloud, and do not count on snow or a close-up of a waterfall. It makes a good centerpiece for a winter visit to Bergen.
Our recommendation for the holidays
For Christmas and New Year 2026–2027, start with a morning Mostraumen cruise and confirm your exact date before you book anything else that day. Choose a harbor cruise only if a shorter trip on the water is what you want, and choose the December 31 evening cruise for the New Year’s atmosphere.
If your dates are flexible, December 20–23 or December 27–30 are easier to plan than the holidays themselves. Even then, check the booking calendar and the forecast before you fix the itinerary, because holiday timetables can change late.
