Bergen Fjord Cruise in December: Daylight, Snow and What to Expect

A fjord cruise from Bergen works in December, even in the darkest weeks of the year. The Mostraumen boats keep sailing on their winter timetables, and the morning departures fit inside the city’s short day. You may see snow on the mountains, mist, waterfalls and the narrow Mostraumen strait. Do not count on snow down at the water or on blue skies.

December in Bergen is often wet and mild. A December cruise gives you a Norwegian fjord in low winter light without a full day of travel inland, and you can stay warm in a heated lounge and step onto the deck for the best stretches. Expect grey and green as often as white.

This page covers December 2026: daylight date by date, the departures you can book, what snow and rain mean for the trip, and how to plan the rest of the day. For the winter season as a whole, from November to March, our winter Mostraumen cruise guide is the main page. Schedules here are the published ones we checked on November 3, 2026; seats and conditions on your day still need checking:

QuestionDecember 2026 answer
Do Mostraumen cruises run in December?Yes. The three main operators publish one morning departure a day. Check the calendar for your date.
When do they leave?Between 10:00 and 11:00, depending on the operator. All three are back before sunset.
How much daylight?About 6 hours 25 minutes on December 1, falling to about 5 hours 45 minutes around the solstice on December 21.
Will it snow?Possibly on the hills and higher mountains; snow on the Bergen waterfront or at sea level is not certain.
Will rain spoil the cruise?Usually not. The heated lounge helps, and low cloud affects the views more than light rain does.
Can ice change the route?Yes. In a hard freeze, the boat may take another route if ice blocks the inner fjord.
How long is the cruise?About 3.5 hours round trip from central Bergen, with no stop ashore.
Is December better than summer? For quiet winter atmosphere on a short Bergen visit, it can be. For long days, green slopes and more departures, choose summer.

Book a morning Mostraumen cruise, keep the afternoon loose, and pack for wind and rain. If your trip falls between December 24 and January 1, our guide to Christmas and New Year fjord cruises covers the holiday exceptions.

Daylight in December 2026, date by date

The days are short, but not too short for a daytime cruise. Bergen lies south of the Arctic Circle, so there is no polar night: the sun rises late, stays low and sets in mid-afternoon.

Sunrise and sunset in central Bergen, in Norwegian winter time (CET), rounded to the minute:

Is there enough light to see Mostraumen?

Yes, on the morning sailings. The three December departures run:

  • 10:00 to about 13:30: Rødne’s Mostraumen cruise.
  • 10:30 to about 14:30: Guided Fjord Tours from Strandkaien 13, listed by Visit Bergen through December 31, 2026.
  • 11:00 to about 14:30: Fjordcharter’s cruise with a live guide.

Even on December 21, the shortest day, all three are due back before the sunset at about 15:29, so nearly the whole trip runs in daylight.

Daylight is not the same as sunshine. The winter sun stays very low, and the steep mountains around the Osterfjord and Mostraumen throw long shadows across the water. On a rainy day the fjord can look grey and dim well before sunset; on a clear one the low sun gives strong reflections and long shadows. If you want to see the landscape, a morning sailing beats a late-afternoon harbor cruise.

Other Bergen Experiences in December

A morning on the Osterfjord leaves the rest of your stay free. Browse what else runs from Bergen in winter, from the Ulriken cable car above the city to full-day trips to Flåm, the Nærøyfjord and the Hardangerfjord:

Will you see snow on a December cruise?

Maybe. It depends on where you look and what the weather has done in the days before. Bergen’s coastal climate can bring rain to the harbor while the mountain tops inland are white, and no date in December reliably turns the whole Mostraumen route snowy.

Think of the view in three layers:

  1. The Bergen waterfront and the lower shores: often wet, green or brown, especially in mild spells.
  2. The hills and mountains above the fjord: more likely to carry snow, especially after a cold spell, though cloud can hide the higher slopes.
  3. The narrow inner fjord: can look more wintry, but snow and ice there change from day to day.

In the city center, December temperatures often sit a few degrees above freezing, so snow seldom stays on the streets for long, even when the mountains around Bergen are white.

Early December or Christmas week?

On December 1 you get about 40 minutes more daylight than at the solstice. That helps with sightseeing later in the day, but it does not mean better conditions on the water.

Late December can feel more festive and wintry, yet whether the slopes are white depends on the weather, not the date. If snowy mountains are the one thing you came for, do not book a December cruise on the assumption that you will get them. Look at the latest webcam images and forecast shortly before you go.

What a December Mostraumen cruise looks like

The route is the attraction. The boat leaves the old wharf buildings of Bryggen behind, crosses open water and follows the Osterfjord into narrower and narrower water until it reaches the Mostraumen strait, where the fjord squeezes between steep rock walls.

You might see:

  • Dark wooded shores with small farms and lone houses.
  • Steep slopes and narrow channels, which look their most dramatic in low winter light.
  • Waterfalls on the rock faces, their flow depending on recent rain and temperature.
  • Snow on higher ground, after cold weather.
  • Mist, cloud and reflections that give the fjord atmosphere without any sun.

On some sailings the crew takes the boat close to a waterfall, conditions permitting. Not every waterfall will be flowing hard, or frozen, and a close approach may not be possible on your day.

The Mostraumen trip is one continuous boat ride. You do not get off to explore a village, hike to a viewpoint or walk behind a waterfall. If your plans need a stop ashore, choose a different tour. Our complete Mostraumen cruise guide follows the route stretch by stretch.

Rain in December

December is one of Bergen’s wettest months. The long-term figures in our month-by-month guide put it at about 290 mm of rain over roughly 19 wet days, with an average daytime high around 5°C. Those are averages, not a forecast for your trip.

Rain does not ruin the views on its own. Light rain brings mist and feeds the waterfalls, and the indoor cabin keeps you comfortable between spells on deck. Low cloud, fog and long heavy rain do more damage to visibility.

Weather on your cruise dayWhat it usually meansWhat to do
Light rain or showersMountain outlines often still visible; waterfalls running wellGo out for photos, then warm up inside
Overcast and drySoft light, little glare; peaks may be hiddenLook at cliffs, farms and water instead of distant summits
Clear and coldSharp views and low winter sunshineGloves and a windproof jacket; the deck feels much colder than the pier
Heavy rain or fogDistant mountains disappearCheck the forecast and the operator’s messages; move the date if your ticket allows
Strong wind or severe weatherThe sailing may be changed or cancelledFollow the operator’s instructions, not a city-center weather app

Do not cancel only because rain is forecast. If you have several days in Bergen and a ticket you can move, compare cloud cover, visibility and wind; the chance-of-rain percentage alone tells you little. For the latest forecast, check Yr, the Norwegian weather service, and your operator’s messages.

Which Mostraumen cruise to book in December 2026

Three departures fit the December daylight. They differ in pier, return time and guiding. These are published schedules, not live seats.

On rodne.no an adult ticket costs NOK 890 in 2026, children aged 4 to 15 pay NOK 445, and the Bergen Card gives 20% off when you book with Rødne. Compare that with the reseller’s final price; our Bergen fjord cruise costs and booking guide sets the two side by side.

Rødne at 10:00 gets you back earliest, with the most afternoon light left for the city. Choose Fjordcharter at 11:00 if a live guide matters more to you than the early return, or Guided Fjord Tours at 10:30 if the 10:00 boat is full.

December 24 and 25

A general schedule cannot show that a seat is bookable on every holiday. Fjordcharter does not sail on Christmas Eve, December 24. Check Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in each operator’s date calendar. The Christmas and New Year cruise guide goes through the holiday dates one by one.

Can ice stop the boat reaching Mostraumen?

It can, but an icy route is not something to expect on a normal December day. At the head of the fjord, river water mixes with the sea, and in a long cold spell ice forms in the inner reaches and can block the narrow passage.

Rødne and Guided Fjord Tours both warn that ice can mean an alternative route. The trip still runs: the captain takes the boat somewhere safe to sightsee. A changed route, a cancelled sailing and your own cancellation can each carry different ticket rules.

If reaching the strait itself is the reason for your trip, read the seller’s terms before you book. After a hard freeze you can ask the operator which route they expect that morning, though the final call may be made on the water.

What to wear in December

The cold you feel comes more from wind on top of damp than from the temperature in the forecast. You can be comfortable on the harbor and then very cold on an open deck once the boat picks up speed.

For a December Mostraumen cruise, bring:

  • A waterproof, windproof jacket, ideally with a hood.
  • A warm mid-layer of fleece or wool that you can take off in the cabin.
  • A thermal base layer if you feel the cold or plan to stay outside taking photos.
  • A hat and gloves, especially for the strait and the waterfall.
  • Water-resistant shoes with grippy soles for a wet or icy deck.
  • A dry bag or rain cover for your phone or camera.

The winter boats have heated lounges, toilets and a kiosk, so you can spend most of the trip inside and go out when the scenery calls for it. Our what to wear guide has the full checklist.

Photography in December light

December light is low, brief and often soft. Your photos will not look like the bright green fjord pictures from June, and that suits reflections, simple compositions and moody winter scenes.

  1. Go outside for the narrow sections. Cabin windows add reflections, droplets and glare.
  2. Watch the cloud forecast as well as the sun. Broken cloud lets shafts of light through; thick low cloud hides the high slopes.
  3. Use a faster shutter speed on deck. Even a smooth boat blurs long-lens shots.
  4. Keep your gear dry. A microfiber cloth and a rain cover do more than a tripod on a moving boat.
  5. Expect short bursts of direct sun. In the narrow sections the mountains block the sun even at midday.

For holiday snapshots, a phone and a dry cloth are enough. There is no need to stand outside for hours in the cold.

Planning the rest of a December day

The afternoon fades early, so build the day around the morning cruise.

Day A: the 10:00 cruise, then central Bergen

09:30–09:40: At the pier on your ticket 20–30 minutes before departure for a window seat.

10:00 to about 13:30: The cruise through the fjord and back.

13:30–14:30: Lunch, or a walk along the waterfront and Bryggen while there is still light for photos.

After about 15:30: Museums, cafés, restaurants and the lit-up streets. Until December 22, the Christmas Market at Festplassen is open too.

Day B: the 10:30 or 11:00 cruise, then the Christmas lights

Morning: Breakfast in the center, then board at the pier on your confirmation.

10:30 or 11:00 to about 14:30: The Mostraumen cruise.

14:30–15:30: A short walk near Bryggen, weather permitting. Leave longer walks for another day: it is dark soon after.

Late afternoon and evening: A café, the Christmas Market (until December 22, 2026) or Pepperkakebyen, Bergen’s gingerbread town.

Visit Bergen lists the Christmas Market from November 20 to December 22, 2026, and Pepperkakebyen from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The market is not open over Christmas itself. Details are on Visit Bergen’s Christmas in Bergen page.

Mostraumen or a longer fjord trip in December?

That depends on whether you want a half-day cruise or a full day out.

Choose Mostraumen if:

  • You have one or two nights in Bergen and want time for the city.
  • You prefer a simple round trip from the waterfront with no transfers.
  • You want the whole boat trip in daylight.
  • You would rather spend the afternoon indoors or at the Christmas sights.

Consider a longer Nærøyfjord or Flåm day if:

  • The famous UNESCO-listed fjord scenery is your main goal.
  • You are happy with a long day on trains, boats and buses.
  • You accept that part of the journey runs in the dark in December.
  • You have time to stay a night along the way if the schedule is tight.

On GetYourGuide, the UNESCO fjord cruise to Flåm and Stegastein with lunch started from $311 and is rated 4.7/5 from 1,492 reviews; check that it runs on your December date.

A longer trip is not automatically better in December. With one full day in Bergen, the half-day Mostraumen cruise leaves room for the weather and the short light. We compare the two in Mostraumen vs Nærøyfjord and Flåm.

When a December cruise may disappoint

A December sailing may let you down if you need any of these:

  • Snow down to the water: December cannot promise it.
  • All-day sunshine and clear panoramas: cloud, rain and shadow are common.
  • A walk around a fjord village: the Mostraumen trip has no shore stop.
  • A late-afternoon departure in full daylight: the December timetable is morning only.
  • The strait itself, whatever the weather: in a hard freeze the boat may take another route, so read the terms first.

If your trip is already booked, none of this means the cruise will be bad. It helps you go with the right expectations.

Frequently asked questions

Is December a good month for a fjord cruise from Bergen?

Yes, if you want winter atmosphere on a simple half-day trip. The Mostraumen cruises publish December departures, and the morning sailings are back before sunset. Do not expect reliable snow at sea level or the long, bright views of summer.

Can you see the fjords from Bergen in December, or is it too dark?

You can see them on a morning cruise. On December 21, 2026, the shortest day, the sun rises at about 09:44 and sets at about 15:29 in Bergen. A 10:00 to 13:30 cruise fits inside that, though steep mountains and heavy cloud can darken parts of the route.

Does it snow on the Mostraumen cruise in December?

It can, mostly higher up. Snow on the shoreline is not certain, and Bergen can be rainy while the mountains around it are white. Check recent photos and the forecast instead of relying on winter marketing images.

Which is better in December, the 10:00 or the 11:00 cruise?

Both run in daylight. The 10:00 Rødne sailing gets you back earliest, with more time for Bergen afterwards. The 11:00 Fjordcharter sailing suits you if you want a live guide. Confirm the pier, the date and the return time before you book.

Are the boats heated in December?

Yes. The Mostraumen boats have heated indoor lounges, so you can spend most of the trip inside and go out on deck for photos and the narrow strait. Facilities vary by vessel.

Does a Bergen fjord cruise run in the rain?

Yes, ordinary rain does not cancel it; Rødne sails rain or shine. Strong wind, unsafe conditions or ice can change or cancel a sailing, and the operator makes that call.

Can you take a Mostraumen cruise on Christmas Day?

The winter schedules cover late December, but that does not confirm a bookable departure on December 25. Check the date in the booking calendar. Fjordcharter does not sail on December 24, and its other holiday dates still need checking.

Do the waterfalls freeze in December?

Some waterfalls and the rock around them can ice up in a cold spell, while others keep running, especially after rain. A frozen waterfall is not certain, and whether the boat can get close depends on conditions.

Is a December fjord cruise suitable for children?

It can be. The boats have indoor areas and toilets, and there is no walking. Bring warm waterproof clothes and something to keep younger children busy on the quieter stretches. Our family and accessibility guide has more on traveling with children.

Will I see the northern lights on a December Mostraumen cruise?

No. The cruise runs in daylight, and Bergen lies well south of Norway's main northern lights areas, so treat the cruise as a fjord trip only.

Is a December fjord cruise from Bergen a good idea?

For many winter visitors, yes. Mostraumen puts steep fjord scenery within half a day of central Bergen, and the morning departures use December’s short daylight well. The heated cabin gets you through wet and windy stretches, and the deck is there for the narrow passage.

Go with December expectations: rain is likely, the light is low, snow may be on the higher ground, and the weather can change the route. If you are traveling over Christmas or New Year, confirm your exact date before you plan the rest of the day, because holiday sailings are not guaranteed.
